When to go

  • Best overall: late May–June and September–early October — warm seas, lighter crowds, and everything open.

  • High summer (Jul–Aug): hottest, busiest, and the Meltemi winds can be strong in the Cyclades (pick the Ionian, Crete, or Rhodes if you want calmer conditions).

  • Winter (Nov–Mar): city breaks (Athens/Thessaloniki) and mainland sights are great; many small islands run reduced services, though bigger ones like Crete, Rhodes, Corfu, Syros keep a solid year-round scene.

Best places by vibe

  • First-timer icons: Athens (Acropolis), Santorini (caldera views), plus Naxos or Paros for beaches and a more relaxed Cyclades feel.

  • Beaches & variety: Crete (Balos, Elafonissi; great food & history), Rhodes (long season), or the Ionian isles (Corfu, Kefalonia, Zakynthos) for green scenery and gentler seas.

  • Romance: Santorini, Milos.

  • Nightlife: Mykonos (Jul–Aug peak), parts of Paros/Ios.

  • Nature & culture: Meteora monasteries, Delphi, and the Peloponnese (Nafplio, Monemvasia, Mani).

7–10 day - Recommended

  • Cyclades lite: Athens 2 → Naxos 3 → Santorini 3 (swap Naxos for Paros if you like). If winds worry you in Jul–Aug, do the Ionian instead: Corfu 4 → Kefalonia 3 → Zakynthos 2.

  • Crete + Athens: Athens 2 → Crete 6–7 (split Chania & Heraklion). Great almost any month because Crete stays lively year-round.

  • Mainland culture + coast: Athens 2 → Nafplio 2 → Mani/Monemvasia 2 → car-free Hydra or Spetses 2.

Sight Seeing

  • Ferries are most frequent May–September; shoulders still workable but with fewer departures,

  • Acropolis uses timed entry — book ahead to avoid sold-out slots/queues.

  • Meltemi tip: in July–August expect gusty northerlies in the Cyclades; mornings are calmer and the Ionian is a softer alternative

Best Family Locations

  • Naxos (Cyclades) – long, sandy, shallow beaches like Agios Prokopios

  • Crete – huge variety: calm beaches near Chania (e.g., Marathi), plus Knossos and the year-round CRETE Aquarium near Heraklion.

  • Rhodes – beach time + the big Faliraki Water Park (seasonal, May–Oct). Waterpark

  • Corfu (Ionian) – green, gentle island with family beaches like Glyfada and a massive Aqualand waterpark.

  • Halkidiki (mainland) – three easy-to-reach peninsulas (from Thessaloniki) with lots of family-friendly, sandy bays.

  • One-base, no ferries (great with toddlers):Fly to Crete → stay near Chania (Marathi/Kalyves/Almyrida) → beach day.

  • Two-stop, light adventure (school-age & teens):Naxos 4–5 nights→ short hop to Paros or Santorini 2–3 nights. If traveling in Jul–Aug, swap to the Ionian instead (e.g., Corfu 5–6 + a day at Aqualand).

Practical tips

  • Sea temps are often warmest in September—great for little swimmers. SeaTemperature.info

  • Ferries run most frequently May–Sep; in shoulder season there are fewer, so plan hops accordingly. Ferryhopper

  • For sun-sensitive kids, target shallow, west-facing beaches (like Naxos’ west coast, Corfu’s Glyfada) and pack reef-safe sunscreen/rash guards.
