Where to stay (quickly):

  • West (Lagos/Alvor): dramatic cliffs, coves, boat/kayak trips.

  • Central (Carvoeiro/Albufeira): best for resort pools + easy beach-hopping.

  • East (Tavira/Olhão): calmer towns, island beaches via ferry.

Getting around:

  • Fly to Faro (FAO) — the region’s hub. Faro Airport

  • Drive for maximum freedom. Good news: A22 motorway tolls were scrapped from Jan 1, 2025, making zipping along the coast cheaper/easier. The Portugal NewsAmn

  • No car? The coastal Algarve line connects Lagos ↔ Faro ↔ Tavira (regional trains; check CP for times). Vamus runs the main intercity buses (plus the Aerobus). CP.PT | Comboios de Portugalvamus.pt

Best time to go:For beach + fewer crowds, aim May–June or Sept–Oct; peak heat is July–Aug. Lonely Planet

Eat this:

  • Cataplana (seafood stew),

  • Octopus from Santa Luzia (east),

  • Piri-piri chicken in Guia (the Algarve’s classic; ask for “frango piri-piri”).
